Over summer in Australia during the hot humid evenings all the little cicadae start singing.
For some people the noise can drive them to distraction but I for one love hearing them, as I have missed the last 40 years of their song, due to my hearing loss.
This was until I received my cochlear implant and WOW now I can hear them in all their glory.
The sounds of nature are one of the BIG pluses when you receive an implant it really brings you back to the world of sound.
But why are we called CICADA Queensland?
It was in 1985 that a new support organisation for recipients of an Implant was created in Sydney NSW and deliberations started on what to call the new group. It was decided by Professor Bill Gibson to call the group CICADA as they are very Australian and made a terrific noise in the ears. This name was accepted and continues to this day.
It stands for Cochlear Implant Club and Advisory Association and has now been running for 35 years and there are groups all over Australia to support anyone with a cochlear implant and anyone considering getting one.
This year CICADA Queensland celebrates a milestone of 30 years of operation and now has groups in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and now another on the Fraser Coast, so it shows that more and more people are finding their way back to the world of sound and the singing of thousands of tiny cicadae.
